Choose Vercel AI Gateway alternatives by the operating, funding or app-commercial responsibility you need to change. Compare OpenRouter, LiteLLM, Cloudflare AI Gateway and Eden AI for selected model-access and gateway requirements. Evaluate ShareAI when an existing app wants eligible inference paid through an approved Builder arrangement, with an allowed app surcharge and attributed earnings.

Reviewed 23 October 2026. ShareAI publishes this comparison and operates one program discussed. Current official references support features; screenshots are actual captures. The executed code is an offline synthetic ledger. No production hosting migration, budget change, Stripe event, customer payment or performance benchmark was performed.

Current Vercel AI Gateway documentation explicitly supports calling the managed service from infrastructure outside Vercel. It also documents provider keys, budgets, reporting and a scoped Stripe metering integration. A comparison that assumes the app must be hosted on Vercel or that no billing integration exists would miss current product behavior.

What Vercel AI Gateway currently offers

The current overview describes a managed gateway callable from servers, clouds and local environments, with compatible APIs, provider routing and request evidence. Reasons to keep it: evaluate that existing scope when it fits the app’s selected models and operating requirements. Moving an application worker to another host does not by itself require replacing the gateway.

Vercel documentation describing provider keys and fallback funding.
Actual official Vercel documentation captured 23 October 2026 after its native Deny control. It is not a configured credential, successful request or payment receipt.

The pricing reference says provider token rates have no added gateway markup or token platform fee, including BYOK. It separately identifies possible payment-processing fees, optional reporting or governance charges and trace-drain billing. Compare the selected complete workload and enabled features. Zero token markup does not establish zero total cost or collected app earnings.

The Stripe integration guide describes emitting token meter events for successful responses. It requires an existing correctly configured dimensioned Billing Meter or Stripe preview access for creating one; it does not send those headers directly to Metronome’s ingest API. Compare the actual account prerequisites and integration instead of assuming a standard Stripe account automatically qualifies every new billing setup.

A presentation app runs parallel model jobs from different hosts

Consider a hypothetical presentation app with existing hosted users. A server creates an outline, while an external worker generates visual content and speaker notes. Several model requests run in parallel for one accepted presentation. Product wants to compare a permitted margin on eligible inference, while finance needs to reconcile provider funding, accepted customer pricing and actual payment.

One worker uses a project identity, another uses a shared gateway API key, and a third model route uses the company’s provider credentials. Those authentication paths can interact differently with budget scopes. A single project label in an application database does not prove that every request consumes the same gateway budget or that the company’s provider spend is capped by it.

The exception case combines a low remaining budget, parallel requests and a failed metering event. The presentation is delivered, and provider usage occurred, but downstream billing evidence is incomplete. Compare the original logical task and its attempts instead of treating a successful final export as proof of correct admission, metering and collection. An unusable slide also needs an explicit commercial correction.

ShareAI Builder ProgramApproved customer-paid inference with an app surchargeEligibility, app attribution and settlement terms
A responsibility-based shortlist for an existing presentation app. Hosting, gateway routing and an accepted customer charge are distinct architectural decisions.

The app can retain Vercel components while evaluating another approved inference or commercial path. That requires a real integration and a clear user explanation. No automatically shared wallet, native connector, copied budget or synchronized invoice among these products is implied. Assign an owner to each request, useful presentation, accepted charge and correction.

Follow a presentation through parallel work and payment

StageEvidence to retainPresentation-app question

Collection and releaseActual receipt and applicable settlement stateWhat value was received and becomes available?
A hypothetical multi-worker presentation with low budget and a failed billing event. No production request, invoice or payment was executed.

Keep those observations linked without collapsing them into one success flag. A gateway can return a response without a downstream meter event succeeding. A configured budget can exclude another credential path. A calculated margin can remain uncollected. Product, support and finance should reconstruct the same original presentation and its explicit adjustment.

OpenRouter: compare model access and the user payer

The OpenRouter quickstart describes managed model access. Its OAuth guide explicitly lets users authorize an app with a user-controlled key and fund inference from their own OpenRouter credits. Pros: compare that supported journey when the presentation app wants the customer to fund eligible model work rather than charge every request to the app owner.

OpenRouter OAuth documentation explaining user-controlled keys and user-funded inference.
Actual official OpenRouter documentation capture retained with source and checksum. It is not an authorization, completed presentation or payment receipt.

Tradeoffs: qualify required model capabilities, user authorization, key handling, provider policy and current terms. The app-attribution guide concerns association with usage and rankings. That alone does not establish an approved app surcharge or received settlement. User-funded inference is not unique to ShareAI; compare the complete permitted commercial arrangement.

For the parallel presentation, preserve the user and expected funding account across all workers. Rehearse exhausted credits and a failed notes request after the outline succeeds. A gateway change should not silently charge the app owner or imply that every slide export, storage, support and payment responsibility moved with the model credential.

LiteLLM: compare cost mapping and internal margins

The LiteLLM pricing guide and margin reference describe cost overrides, discounts and percentage or fixed-amount fees for internal billing. Pros: compare those documented controls when the presentation app wants its own gateway price mapping and allocation. Configurable margins are not exclusive ShareAI capabilities.

LiteLLM documentation describing custom prices, provider discounts and margins.
Actual official LiteLLM documentation capture retained with source and checksum. A configured margin is not received customer money or an available settlement.

Tradeoffs: qualify operating ownership, actual model prices, effective budgets and collection. The current pricing reference notes that explicit zero input and output costs bypass budget checks. Its billing guide also documents a Lago integration. A zero estimate or published callback does not prove the complete production commercial path works.

For the external worker, inspect a known nonzero request and the trusted customer mapping. Preserve original provider cost, internally allocated value and accepted customer price separately. Operating the gateway requires updates, availability and recovery. A public source path does not make the complete service free or include every enterprise feature and commercial support obligation.

Cloudflare AI Gateway: compare funding and custom routes

The Cloudflare unified-billing reference describes provider-key and credit-funded paths. Its custom-provider guide covers HTTPS endpoints, including self-hosted model examples. Pros: compare this existing scope when the presentation app wants a different gateway and actual funding arrangement for selected model work.

Cloudflare documentation describing custom HTTPS providers and self-hosted models.
Actual official Cloudflare documentation capture retained with source and checksum. A documented endpoint path does not prove access to private presentation infrastructure.

Tradeoffs: qualify request format, credential priority, retained controls and actual customer pricing. A unified compatibility path and a provider-specific path have different requirements. The current machine-payment beta has a restricted scope; it is not universal app checkout. A successful response or cost chart alone does not establish paid app earnings.

For the presentation, rehearse a missing provider key and inspect the funding source actually used. Preserve your policy for cached content, repeated visual attempts and an incomplete export. A different gateway should not silently transfer a charge or imply that every existing budget, reporting field and billing integration moved automatically.

Eden AI: compare language-model and expert-processing tasks

The Eden AI V3 introduction describes compatible language-model access alongside expert-model processing such as OCR and translation. Pros: compare actual supported tasks when the presentation app also prepares uploaded material before generating content. A final chat request alone does not describe all document preparation and asynchronous processing work.

Eden AI V3 introduction describing language-model and expert-model paths.
Actual official Eden AI documentation capture retained with source and checksum. Compatibility does not establish equivalent task, region or payment semantics.

Tradeoffs: qualify exact task coverage, model availability, provider funding and regional policy. The metadata reference documents optional route and funding evidence with cache, streaming and asynchronous boundaries. A successful HTTP response is not always a completed application task. Compare the actual useful result and its linked commercial record.

For the uploaded presentation source, preserve the preparation output that the outline used. Rehearse a failed processing stage and an explicit customer correction. Keep the accepted app charge separate from a provider estimate, and do not assume a model-access migration automatically transfers every file, historical record and organization policy.

ShareAI: compare approved app margin and settlement

The ShareAI Builder Program concerns an app that already exists with its own users. Eligible traffic routes through ShareAI, the Builder configures a permitted surcharge or margin, and the end customer pays ShareAI for that inference. App-attributed earnings follow the program. Pros: evaluate this approved payment and attribution journey for the presentation app’s eligible model work.

ShareAI Builder preview separating estimated inference cost and illustrative app surcharge.
Actual ShareAI Builder preview captured 21 October 2026. Estimates do not establish a paid receipt, net profit, released settlement or guaranteed usage.

Tradeoffs: approval, eligible traffic, actual model access and account terms matter. Validated company Builders have a 45-day review period before payout. Individuals currently accumulate inference value for ShareAI use, without cash-out or account transfers. The app remains built, hosted, distributed and maintained elsewhere. Its slide exports, other subscriptions, customer support and financial duties remain explicit responsibilities.

Providing infrastructure or a custom endpoint belongs to applicable Provider or Prosumer onboarding, separately from Builder attribution. Other gateways already address model routes, prices and margins. Compare actual acceptance, permitted price, payer and release. The Builder Program does not establish a universal hosting replacement, a general merchant-of-record service or automatic transfer of Vercel budgets and billing policies.

Authentication and funding determine which budget applies

Vercel documentation describing gateway budget scopes and enforcement.
Actual official Vercel documentation captured 23 October 2026 after its native Deny control. No budget, key or project setting was changed.

The budget guide distinguishes team, project, key and member scopes. Project accounting applies to the project’s deployment identity, not every API key used by code in that project. It also describes a soft cap: requests admitted before the limit is crossed can complete. Compare actual authentication and concurrency before promising a strict zero-overshoot commercial allowance.

The BYOK reference says provider-key spend is metered separately and is not capped by those gateway budgets. A failed provider-key request can fall back to system credentials and consume gateway credit. For the presentation workers, inspect the exact funding path and applicable limits. A valid company provider key and a configured project budget do not establish the same financial boundary.

A successful model response can outlive a failed billing event

Vercel documentation describing its Stripe usage-metering integration.
Actual official Vercel documentation captured 23 October 2026 after its native Deny control. The documented integration was not configured and no Stripe event or charge was created.

The Stripe metering guide says event emission is non-blocking: a failed meter event does not prevent the AI response. Missing required headers also allow the request to proceed without that billing integration. Qualify trusted customer mapping, actual event acceptance and exception recovery. A completed presentation alone does not prove the intended billing record exists or a customer paid.

The custom-reporting reference provides usage breakdowns by attributes such as model, user, provider or credential type. Reporting and accepted customer pricing remain separate records. The ecosystem overview also describes optional app-attribution headers for visibility. Neither a reporting tag nor a featured app entry is an earnings or settlement receipt.

For arithmetic only, 1000 USD of inference plus a hypothetical 15% surcharge produces 150 USD gross surcharge and 1150 USD total. These synthetic amounts are not Vercel or ShareAI fees, collected earnings, net profit or a tax result. Actual provider, reporting, payment and infrastructure costs, corrections and eligibility affect the business outcome.

Check arithmetic before qualifying the live payment path

The executed fixture below deduplicates identical activity, rejects a conflicting duplicate and records an explicit adjustment using integer USD cents. It does not change a budget, send a model request, emit a Stripe event or collect payment. Those outcomes require actual application and commercial evidence around the calculation.

JavaScript

import assert from "node:assert/strict";
const records = [
  {id: "usage-a", customer: "demo", cents: 60000n, kind: "usage"},
  {id: "usage-b", customer: "demo", cents: 50000n, kind: "usage"},
  {id: "usage-a", customer: "demo", cents: 60000n, kind: "usage"},
  {id: "adjustment-b", customer: "demo", cents: -10000n, kind: "adjustment"}
];
function netCents(rows) {
  const seen = new Map();
  let total = 0n;
  for (const row of rows) {
    assert.equal(row.customer, "demo");
    const fingerprint = [row.customer, row.cents.toString(), row.kind].join("|");
    if (seen.has(row.id)) {
      if (seen.get(row.id) !== fingerprint) throw new Error("Conflicting duplicate");
      continue;
    }
    if (row.cents < 0n && row.kind !== "adjustment") throw new Error("Invalid sign");
    seen.set(row.id, fingerprint);
    total += row.cents;
  }
  return total;
}
const base = netCents(records);
assert.equal(base, 100000n);
assert.throws(() => netCents([...records,
  {id: "usage-a", customer: "demo", cents: 1n, kind: "usage"}
]));
const numerator = base * 1500n; // Hypothetical 15 percent in basis points.
if (numerator % 10000n !== 0n) throw new Error("Define contractual rounding first");
const surcharge = numerator / 10000n;
assert.equal(surcharge, 15000n);
const usd = cents => `${cents / 100n}.${(cents % 100n).toString().padStart(2, "0")}`;
console.log(JSON.stringify({baseUSD: usd(base), grossSurchargeUSD: usd(surcharge),
  totalUSD: usd(base + surcharge), paidReceiptVerified: false}));

Observed output is 1000 USD illustrative inference, 150 USD gross surcharge and 1150 USD total, with no verified paid receipt. Preserve original presentation identity, actual attempts, trusted customer mapping and accepted corrections in production. A correct sum cannot establish budget enforcement, successful metering or available earnings.

Move one presentation and its failed-metering path first

  • Inventory actual workers, authentication, provider funding and budget scopes.
  • Select the gateway or commercial responsibility that needs to change.
  • Preserve trusted user, customer and logical-presentation identity.
  • Rehearse parallel work, key fallback, failed meter events and correction.
  • Verify actual payment evidence without duplicate live collection.
  • Retain original records and rollback until the complete customer journey is qualified.

Keep Vercel AI Gateway when its current arrangement fits, including calls from other infrastructure. Compare a replacement by the complete presentation workflow and its financial exception. A zero-markup endpoint, an attractive dashboard and a successful export each answer useful questions, while actual app commercialization needs all the relevant evidence connected.

Frequently asked questions

Which Vercel AI Gateway alternatives should an AI app compare?

OpenRouter, LiteLLM, Cloudflare AI Gateway and Eden AI address selected gateway and processing requirements. ShareAI concerns approved customer-paid inference with an app surcharge. Choose by the actual operating or commercial responsibility you need to change.

Does an app have to run on Vercel to use AI Gateway?

No. The current official overview explicitly supports calls from servers, other clouds and local environments. Compare gateway hosting separately from where your application runs. Moving a worker to another host does not automatically require a gateway replacement.

Does zero token markup mean the whole service has zero cost?

No. The pricing reference separately describes possible payment-processing fees, enabled reporting and governance charges, and trace-drain billing. Provider usage also costs money. Compare the actual enabled workload and current account terms rather than only the token markup.

Do Vercel gateway budgets cap BYOK provider spend?

The current BYOK and budget references say provider-key spend is metered separately and does not count toward those gateway limits. Failed BYOK requests can fall back to system credentials and consume gateway credit. Qualify actual funding and authentication paths.

Are Vercel AI Gateway budgets hard zero-overshoot limits?

The current guide describes soft caps checked when requests begin. A request that crosses the limit can complete, and parallel work needs qualification. Project, key and member scopes also depend on authentication and attribution. A project label alone does not prove every worker uses that cap.

Does the Stripe billing integration automatically work for every new account?

No. The current guide requires an existing configured dimensioned Billing Meter or private-preview access to create one. Its headers send Billing Meter events, not Metronome ingest events, and failed metering does not block the AI response. Qualify the actual prerequisites and event evidence.

How does ShareAI Builder settlement differ by account type?

Validated company Builders have a 45-day review period before payout. Individuals currently accumulate inference value for ShareAI use, without cash-out or account transfers. Approval, eligible traffic and account terms apply; usage and earnings are not guaranteed.

Can ShareAI automatically replace Vercel hosting and controls?

The Builder Program concerns approved routed inference, an allowed app surcharge and attribution. The app remains hosted and maintained elsewhere. Other hosting, gateway policies, software charges and financial duties require explicit decisions; no automatic budget, policy or wallet migration is implied.
