Choose Eden AI alternatives by the capabilities your application actually uses: language models, expert-model processing, routing, regional controls or the customer’s inference payment. Compare OpenRouter, LiteLLM, Portkey and Cloudflare AI Gateway for selected gateway requirements. Evaluate ShareAI when an existing app wants eligible inference paid through ShareAI with an approved app surcharge and attributed earnings.
Reviewed 23 October 2026. ShareAI publishes this comparison and operates one program discussed. Current official references support feature descriptions; screenshots are actual captures. The executed code is an offline synthetic ledger. No production document processing, regional verification, key provisioning, migration or customer payment was performed.
The current Eden AI V3 documentation describes OpenAI-compatible language-model access alongside expert-model features such as OCR, translation and audio processing. Do not assume an older custom API format or a narrower model inventory describes every current endpoint. Equally, a compatible chat interface does not make all document-processing and asynchronous workflows interchangeable with another gateway.
What the current Eden AI product already covers
The V3 introduction describes language-model and expert-model paths, with routing, fallback and cost tracking. Reasons to keep it: evaluate this existing scope when an app combines document or speech processing with language-model work. Removing one integration layer can create new work if the replacement only covers the final chat request and leaves the earlier processing without a qualified implementation.
The current pricing FAQ says provider prices are passed through, with a 5.5% platform fee applied when purchasing credits. That differs from a per-token resale markup. The page also lists a separately scoped Advanced offering, including custom billing and deployment needs. Request the actual commercial scope instead of repeating a blanket claim that every customer has an identical cloud-only package.
The BYOK guide covers organization-wide provider keys on eligible plans. Requests using those keys are billed by the provider, while returned costs are estimates based on public rates. Provider keys, Eden AI access keys and the app’s own customer identity have different roles. Owning one of those credentials does not establish who should pay every downstream product charge.
A document-review app combines extraction and a final explanation
Consider a hypothetical business app that extracts text and tables from uploaded documents, then generates an AI explanation. Customers already use its hosted workspace. Some documents need an expert OCR provider; others have usable text. A business customer requires its selected regional processing policy, while product wants to compare customer-paid inference for the final explanation.
The useful unit is the completed document review, not merely the final model response. Preserve the original upload, selected extraction result and explanation as related observations. An extraction retry can produce a different table, and a cached explanation may not call a provider at all. The customer’s price needs an explicit definition of useful delivered work and corrections for an unusable result.
The exception case matters most. An allowed provider fails and a fallback is available in another region. The app must preserve the customer’s policy rather than silently prioritize a successful answer. It also needs to know which stage used the company’s provider key, which consumed gateway credits and which charge the customer accepted. One successful HTTP response cannot answer every question.
Compare alternatives by the processing and commercial boundary
| Option | Evaluate it for | Qualify separately |
|---|---|---|
| OpenRouter | Managed model access and user-controlled inference keys | Required extraction capabilities and the app commercial arrangement |
| LiteLLM | Gateway pricing configuration and internal margins | Actual provider coverage, deployment and collection |
| Portkey | Gateway controls and AI request observability | Selected features, deployment and document-processing integration |
| Cloudflare AI Gateway | Provider keys, unified billing and custom HTTPS providers | Request format, funding priority and regional requirements |
| ShareAI Builder Program | Approved customer-paid inference with an app surcharge | Eligible traffic, attribution and account-specific settlement |
The document app can keep its qualified extraction path while evaluating another approved inference journey. That requires a real integration, compatible models and a clear customer explanation. No native connector, shared wallet or automatic transfer of regional policy among these services is implied. Assign ownership of the original upload, useful result, customer charge and correction explicitly.
Follow one document through processing and payment
| Stage | Evidence to retain | Document-review question |
|---|---|---|
| Admission | Trusted customer, document and selected policy | May this document use this processing route? |
| Extraction | Actual provider, attempt and structured result | What source material did the explanation use? |
| Inference | Model, actual route and funding source | Which account paid for the explanation? |
| Delivery and correction | Useful result and original adjustment | What did the customer receive or dispute? |
| Collection and release | Accepted charge and actual payment status | What value was received and becomes available? |
Keep technical success and commercial completion distinct. A queued extraction is not the completed review, a cost estimate is not an invoice, and a payment authorization is not necessarily released money. Support should be able to explain the same document that product measures and finance reconciles, including the original record and any explicit correction.
OpenRouter: compare the model and user-funded access journey
The OpenRouter quickstart describes managed model access. Its OAuth guide explicitly lets users authorize an app with a user-controlled key and pay inference from their own OpenRouter credits. Pros: evaluate that supported journey for the document app’s explanation stage when customer-funded access is the intended change.
Tradeoffs: qualify the required model capabilities, extraction workflow, allowed routes, key handling and current commercial terms. The app-attribution reference concerns association with usage and rankings. That alone does not establish an approved app surcharge or received earnings. User-funded inference is not unique to ShareAI; compare the complete arrangement.
For the document customer, rehearse a disconnected user account and an explanation that fails after extraction succeeds. Preserve the accepted price and the useful result independently of credential state. A gateway change should not silently cause the app to charge its own account for a request the customer expected to fund, or charge twice when the user retries the document.
LiteLLM: compare operating control and internal pricing
The LiteLLM custom-pricing reference describes model-cost overrides, provider discounts and provider margins for internal billing. Pros: compare those current controls when the document app wants to evaluate cost mapping and allocation within its selected gateway implementation. An assertion that configurable margins only exist at ShareAI would be inaccurate.
Tradeoffs: qualify deployment operations, actual task coverage, price lookup, budgets and collection. The current guide notes that explicitly zero input and output costs bypass budget checks. A custom OCR result followed by a language-model request still needs an application-level record that connects the stages; one model-cost entry does not establish the whole document’s commercial treatment.
For the document app, compare one known nonzero request, a custom price and a deliberate correction. Keep the original provider cost, internally allocated amount and accepted customer charge separate. Operating the selected gateway also requires an explicit update, availability and recovery plan rather than assuming free source code makes the complete service free to run.
Portkey: compare request controls and observability
The current Portkey documentation describes gateway, observability, guardrail and administration capabilities, with separate deployment references. Pros: compare the selected scope when the app needs a clearer view of model requests and their operational policies. Evaluate the actual product and integration rather than infer universal feature parity from a broad model-catalog claim.
Tradeoffs: qualify the exact edition, retained data, deployment and required expert-processing path. Request visibility and a spend control answer different questions from receiving customer money. A self-hosted gateway reference also does not automatically establish that every managed dashboard, commercial feature or enterprise support obligation is included in the selected arrangement.
For the document customer, compare the extraction failure, final explanation and correction as related observations. Preserve the actual error the app receives, not just a final successful response. The useful result is an explainable delivered review whose data path and funding are known, rather than a chart that aggregates several unrelated attempts into a single number.
Cloudflare AI Gateway: compare funding and custom providers
The Cloudflare unified-billing reference describes provider-key and credit-funded paths. Its custom-provider documentation covers HTTPS endpoints, including self-hosted model examples. Pros: compare those current capabilities when the app wants to evaluate its actual provider and funding arrangement with a different gateway.
Tradeoffs: qualify request format, credential priority, gateway controls, regional requirements and customer payment. Compatible chat routing and provider-specific paths have different constraints. A successful request through a custom provider does not automatically recreate every expert-model API, uploaded-file workflow or accepted commercial agreement used by the document app.
For the failed extraction scenario, preserve which stage is being replaced and which stays in the existing service. Inspect the real credential and funding source when a key is absent. Assign an explicit owner to cache behavior and any retained request content. A hostname change alone cannot prove that the whole document workflow still satisfies the customer’s selected policy.
ShareAI: compare eligible inference, app margin and release
The ShareAI Builder Program concerns an app that already exists with its own users. Eligible AI traffic routes through ShareAI, the Builder configures a permitted surcharge or margin, and the end customer pays ShareAI for that inference. App-attributed earnings follow the program. Pros: evaluate this approved journey for the document app’s eligible inference rather than assume it replaces every processing stage.
Tradeoffs: approval, eligible models and traffic, actual routing and account terms matter. Validated company Builders have a 45-day review period before payout. Individuals currently accumulate inference value for ShareAI use, without cash-out or account transfers. The app remains built, hosted, distributed and maintained elsewhere. Its extraction service, support delivery and other commercial obligations remain explicit decisions.
Providing infrastructure or a custom endpoint belongs to applicable Provider or Prosumer onboarding, separately from Builder attribution. Custom prices, provider keys, margins and endpoints are not exclusive ShareAI capabilities. Compare actual acceptance, payer and settlement. The Builder Program does not establish a universal OCR replacement, general merchant-of-record service or automatic regional-policy equivalence.
Compare fallback layers and regional rejection explicitly
The fallback guide distinguishes named backup models from alternate providers of the requested model. Disabling provider-level fallback does not remove the app’s explicit backup list. The EU endpoint guide documents rejection of a request containing an ineligible primary or fallback, rather than silent rerouting to the global endpoint. These are documented behaviors to qualify, not an independent residency audit.
For the document app, inspect the entire fallback list before changing the production host. Preserve an explicit regional rejection as an application outcome with a clear customer message. A generic retry that sends the same document elsewhere could defeat the intended policy. Confirm provider availability for the exact extraction feature and explanation model rather than assume a broad catalog label guarantees both.
Use actual request metadata without mistaking it for a receipt
The request-metadata reference exposes optional provider, region, attempt and BYOK information. Streaming metadata begins on the first chunk and can be corrected by a later error frame. Cache responses omit the block; asynchronous job polling has a different scope. Universal AI can return HTTP 200 with a failed status. Inspect the actual application result instead of treating transport success or missing metadata as complete proof.
Keep management credentials separate from inference access. The custom-key reference describes budget, expiry and management scopes, with sandbox keys returning simulated responses. A successful sandbox result is useful integration evidence without proving provider execution or payment. Compare actual production records before accepting the complete workflow as commercially qualified.
For arithmetic only, 1000 USD of inference plus a hypothetical 15% surcharge produces 150 USD gross surcharge and 1150 USD total. These synthetic amounts are not Eden AI or ShareAI fees, received earnings, net profit or a tax result. Actual processing costs, purchase fees, corrections and eligibility affect the business outcome.
Check a calculation before qualifying the complete document journey
The executed fixture below deduplicates identical activity, rejects a conflicting duplicate and preserves an explicit adjustment in integer USD cents. It does not upload a file, call a regional endpoint, provision a key or collect payment. Those outcomes require actual application and commercial evidence around the calculation.

Preserve original document and logical-work identity, actual provider attempts, accepted terms and corrections in production. A correct sum cannot establish processing location or received money.
Move one document type and its failed-processing case first
- Inventory actual V3 or older endpoints, extraction tasks and customer policies.
- Select the processing, gateway or commercial responsibility that needs to change.
- Preserve trusted customer and document identity across every attempt.
- Rehearse regional rejection, failed extraction, interrupted streaming and correction.
- Verify actual production and payment evidence without duplicate live collection.
- Retain original records and rollback until the whole customer journey is qualified.
Keep Eden AI when its current scope fits. Compare an alternative by the complete document review, including useful delivery, explicit failure and payment. The V3 introduction also gives an end-of-2026 support boundary for the older version available to eligible pre-January-2026 users; confirm the actual account and endpoint before scheduling that migration.
Frequently asked questions
Which Eden AI alternatives should an AI app compare?
OpenRouter, LiteLLM, Portkey and Cloudflare AI Gateway address selected gateway or model-access needs. ShareAI concerns approved customer-paid inference with an app surcharge. Map actual language-model and expert-processing tasks before choosing a replacement.
Is current Eden AI V3 compatible with the OpenAI API?
The current V3 introduction documents OpenAI-compatible language-model access. Expert-model and asynchronous endpoints still have their own request and result semantics. Do not assume an older incompatibility claim describes every current endpoint or that compatibility proves complete task parity.
Where does Eden AI apply its platform fee?
The current pricing FAQ says provider prices are passed through and a 5.5% platform fee applies when purchasing credits. Eligible BYOK requests are billed by the provider, with returned cost estimates. Verify the selected plan, provider and current terms.
Does disabling provider fallback remove every backup model?
No. The current guide distinguishes alternate providers of the requested model from the app’s explicit fallback list. Disabling provider-level fallback does not remove those named backup models. Qualify both layers in the actual request.
Does the EU endpoint silently fall back to the global endpoint?
The current official guide documents regional filtering and rejection when an ineligible primary or fallback is listed, rather than silent global rerouting. That is documented scope to verify for the exact task; it is not an independent legal or residency audit.
Does an HTTP 200 prove a completed document review?
No. The request-metadata reference notes that Universal AI can return HTTP 200 with a failed status. Asynchronous creation, polling, cache delivery and streaming also differ. Verify the actual useful result and its linked commercial record.
How does ShareAI Builder settlement differ by account type?
Validated company Builders have a 45-day review period before payout. Individuals currently accumulate inference value for ShareAI use, without cash-out or account transfers. Approval, eligible traffic and current account terms apply; usage and earnings are not guaranteed.
Can ShareAI replace every Eden AI task?
The Builder Program concerns approved routed inference, an allowed app surcharge and attribution. The app remains hosted and maintained elsewhere. Extraction, other processing tasks, regional policies and financial duties require explicit decisions; no universal replacement or native connector is implied.
