OpenMeter alternatives for AI apps: access, billing and inference margin

Compare OpenMeter alternatives by deployment, entitlement continuity, usage billing and approved customer-paid inference with ShareAI.

View as Markdown

Choose OpenMeter alternatives after identifying the deployment you use. The official documentation says OpenMeter Cloud is now Konnect Metering & Billing, while the open-source project remains a separate implementation path. Compare Stigg, Schematic, Flexprice and Lago for selected access or usage-billing requirements. Evaluate ShareAI when an existing app wants eligible inference paid through ShareAI with an approved app surcharge.

Reviewed 23 October 2026. ShareAI publishes this comparison and operates one program discussed. Features rely on current official references; screenshots are actual captures. The code is an executed offline synthetic ledger. No production entitlement migration, usage reset, gateway deployment, customer payment or performance benchmark was performed.

Current OpenMeter references cover metering, product catalog, subscriptions, entitlements and billing integrations. Comparing only an event counter misses that scope. Equally, the open-source license does not automatically establish the commercial terms, API shape or operating responsibilities of the managed service. Identify the actual product, version and account arrangement before deciding which workflow needs a replacement.

What current OpenMeter and its managed-service path cover

The current entitlement overview describes metered, static and boolean access, with grants and customer-specific configuration. Reasons to keep the selected implementation: evaluate these existing capabilities when they already connect the app’s purchased plans to actual usage. A difficult plan change can require a focused continuity fix rather than replacing working metering and billing integrations.

OpenMeter entitlement documentation displaying the transition notice to Konnect Metering & Billing.
Actual official OpenMeter documentation captured 23 October 2026 after its native Reject All control. The visible transition notice distinguishes the managed product path.

The official repository and its license file identify the open-source project under Apache 2.0. Compare the actual version, license and deployment selected. Operating that implementation requires its own infrastructure and recovery decisions; a managed product’s hosted features or service terms do not follow automatically from a public repository.

The current Kong entitlement reference describes rate-card entitlements and a separate gateway enforcement plugin. It identifies the documented managed capability as incompatible with an on-premises service deployment. A gateway running on the company’s infrastructure is a different architectural fact from the location and operating model of the metering and billing control service. Qualify both explicitly.

An AI support platform changes a customer’s plan during live work

Consider a hypothetical AI support app with a recurring token allowance, permitted model choices and a premium administrative feature. One business customer upgrades while several support conversations are running. Its previous allowance has an overage, and the next usage period starts soon. The app must preserve usable access, the intended carry-forward policy and the financial explanation of any later charge.

Separate the rights involved. A token allowance is metered, a permitted-model configuration is structured data, and the administrative feature can be a boolean right. An upgrade should not silently replace all three with one active flag. Preserve the trusted customer and feature mapping so a model-choice change does not accidentally reset measured usage or grant a premium function to the wrong workspace.

Use the in-progress conversations to compare continuity. A new plan can look correct after migration while the customer briefly loses access or receives conflicting treatment during the change. Also preserve the meaning of a period reset and carried overage. A successful response for the latest balance does not prove that historical rights, concurrent execution and accepted commercial terms remain correct.

Compare alternatives by the responsibility they change

ShareAI Builder ProgramEligible inference paid through ShareAI with app attributionApproval, routing, surcharge and settlement terms
A responsibility-based comparison; these choices do not automatically have identical feature semantics, deployments or customer payment relationships.

The support app can retain a working software subscription while evaluating another approved payment journey for eligible inference. That requires actual integration and a clear customer explanation. No native connector, automatically shared entitlement state or synchronized wallet among these platforms is implied. Assign a single owner to each purchased right, customer charge and resulting correction.

Preserve access through the commercial lifecycle

StageEvidence to retainSupport-app question
Purchase and grantAccepted plan, customer and feature mappingWhich rights did this customer acquire?
Runtime checkApplicable configuration and actual admission resultMay this conversation or model request proceed?
ConsumptionLogical work and the agreed measured unitWhat consumed the allowance?
Plan change and resetEffective timing, current rights and overage policyWhat remains usable during and after the change?
Correction and paymentOriginal activity, adjustment and actual collectionWhat changed and what money was received?
A hypothetical plan upgrade during active conversations. No production access, reset, invoice or payment was executed.

Evaluate these stages together without collapsing them into one status. A plan can be purchased before a particular allowance becomes effective, and a balance can be calculated before an invoice is paid. Support should be able to explain the current model choices and remaining rights while finance retains the original charge and any explicit adjustment.

Stigg: compare entitlement and credit governance

The current Stigg introduction describes metering, entitlements, credits and governance, with broader commercial options. Pros: compare the selected current scope when the support app needs to evaluate rights across customers, users, teams or agents. Its current product is broader than a static feature-flag checklist, and deployment choices are part of the evaluation.

Stigg documentation describing its Stripe billing integration.
Actual official Stigg documentation capture retained with its source and checksum. It does not establish migrated rights or a completed support-app payment.

Tradeoffs: qualify the actual deployment, credit rules, request checks, contract features and billing integration needed. A governance or entitlement feature does not prove that every concurrent conversation in this app receives the correct decision. Compare actual failure behavior and account terms instead of adopting universal claims that another billing product cannot enforce any access.

For the upgrading customer, compare token allowance, permitted models and the premium feature independently. Rehearse the change during active conversations and inspect the next period. Preserve the original right and any overage treatment rather than accept a matching final balance after a temporary access interruption or an unintended reset of historical usage.

Schematic: compare commercial plans and actual product access

The Schematic overview describes usage billing, metering, credits, limits and customer spending visibility alongside mixed pricing. Pros: compare the selected configuration when the support app wants pricing and what customers may actually do evaluated together. A feature flag alone does not describe the full current commercial scope.

Schematic documentation introducing usage and monetization workflows.
Actual official Schematic documentation capture retained with source and checksum. No plan transition or production admission behavior was measured for this guide.

Tradeoffs: qualify the exact payment arrangement, credit behavior, runtime checks and customer experience. An available plan or entitlement configuration does not automatically migrate every old allowance and historical right. Verify the selected account and integration rather than assume a product-family claim guarantees identical behavior for the app’s source events and concurrency.

For the support customer, evaluate the mid-conversation upgrade, a low allowance and the new model choices. Preserve which commercial terms govern work already in progress. The useful result is continuous, explainable access with a correct consumption record, rather than simply an attractive plan screen after the exception has passed.

Flexprice: compare usage, grants and deployment ownership

The Flexprice documentation describes usage monetization, credits and feature-related workflows. Its credit-based recipe covers grants and recurring arrangements. Pros: compare the actual selected scope when the app wants to evaluate how purchased allowance and measured resources become usage rights and commercial records.

Flexprice documentation introducing its monetization platform.
Actual official Flexprice documentation capture retained with source and checksum. It does not establish an integrated support-app grant or actual payment.

Tradeoffs: the self-hosting reference identifies configuration and operating responsibilities. Qualify the selected deployment, source mapping and complete payment and finance flow. Cloud and self-hosted integrations can differ. A customer-facing portal also has a different trust boundary from a server-side integration authorized to change grants or commercial terms.

For the support app, compare a recurring allowance, separate added credits and the chosen treatment of carried overage. Preserve trusted customer and feature identities through the upgrade. A new credit number should remain connected to the original purchased rights and explicit adjustments so a migration does not create free access or silently remove a customer’s remaining value.

Lago: compare usage billing and the selected operational model

The Lago documentation describes usage billing, while the official repository provides its open-source deployment path. Pros: compare the actual selected edition when the support app wants to evaluate usage monetization with a different operational model and degree of infrastructure control.

Lago documentation introducing usage-based billing.
Actual official Lago documentation capture retained with source and checksum. No production deployment, conversation allowance or collection was created.

Tradeoffs: qualify edition-specific access and credit capabilities, source integration and the surrounding payment and financial workflows. Self-hosting brings responsibility for updates, availability and recovery. A public source path does not automatically supply every managed feature, become the merchant of record or replace the app’s model-serving infrastructure and customer execution logic.

For the upgrading customer, preserve accepted terms and test the actual plan transition and period boundary in the selected configuration. Verify consumption, corrections and issued documents separately from model access. A billing deployment that produces a correct total still needs a qualified application path for permitting or stopping a live support conversation.

ShareAI: compare inference payment and app attribution

The ShareAI Builder Program concerns an app that already exists with its own users. Eligible AI traffic routes through ShareAI, the Builder configures a permitted surcharge or margin, and the end customer pays ShareAI for that inference. App-attributed earnings follow the program. Pros: compare this journey when the intended change concerns approved customer-paid inference associated with the support application.

ShareAI Builder preview separating illustrative inference cost and application surcharge.
Actual ShareAI Builder preview captured 21 October 2026. Estimates do not establish a paid receipt, net profit, available settlement or guaranteed usage.

Tradeoffs: app approval, eligible traffic, actual model access and account terms matter. Validated company Builders have a 45-day review period before payout. Individuals currently accumulate inference value for ShareAI use, without cash-out or account transfers. The app remains built, hosted, distributed and maintained elsewhere. Its other subscriptions, support delivery and financial duties remain explicit architecture decisions.

Supplying model-serving infrastructure or a custom endpoint belongs to applicable Provider or Prosumer onboarding, separately from Builder attribution. Custom prices, margins and endpoints are not exclusive ShareAI capabilities. Compare actual routing, payer and settlement. This program does not establish a replacement for every OpenMeter entitlement, software agreement, general merchant-of-record or financial-reporting responsibility.

Use the documentation that matches the actual service

Kong documentation describing managed metering and billing entitlements.
Actual official Kong documentation captured 23 October 2026 after its native Reject All control. The page identifies managed-service and enforcement boundaries.

The current managed-service reference connects entitlements to rate cards and identifies a separate gateway plugin for enforcement. The OpenMeter entitlement guide instead documents its own customer/feature access API and historical behavior. Qualify the actual service, API version and client implementation. A shared project history does not prove that example endpoints or migration operations can be exchanged unchanged.

Compare the location and ownership of each component. The app, a gateway, event production, usage storage, billing configuration and payment processing can sit in different systems. An on-premises gateway does not automatically make the managed entitlement service an on-premises deployment. Likewise, the Apache 2.0 source path does not by itself establish hosted availability or account-specific enterprise support.

For the support app, preserve a clear failure policy when the selected access service is delayed or unavailable. Test the actual behavior rather than infer it from words such as real time or edge. A balance calculation and a gateway rejection are different observations. The complete integration should explain which request proceeded, why it was allowed and how its consumption was recorded.

Qualify plan continuity and period-reset semantics

The OpenMeter entitlement guide describes a potential access gap when old rights are removed and new ones are created during a plan migration. It also describes historical access queries and usage-period reset behavior. Treat those as version-specific documented boundaries to test, rather than universal claims about every managed deployment or an instruction to delete a production customer’s rights.

Preserve the chosen policy for overage at reset and distinguish historical query granularity from a current access check. For the support customer, compare an active conversation, an upgrade and the next period together. Matching the final plan without preserving continuous rights and the intended overage treatment can make an apparently successful migration commercially incorrect.

Request current written scope for the selected products, hosting, integrations and migration support. For arithmetic only, 1000 USD of inference plus a hypothetical 15% surcharge produces 150 USD gross surcharge and 1150 USD total. These synthetic amounts are not OpenMeter or ShareAI fees, collected earnings, net profit or a tax result. Actual costs, corrections and eligibility affect the business outcome.

Verify arithmetic before evaluating access and collection

The executed fixture below deduplicates identical activity, rejects a conflicting duplicate and preserves an explicit adjustment. It calculates the illustrative surcharge with integer USD cents. It does not call an entitlement API, deploy a gateway, reset usage or collect payment. Those outcomes require actual application and commercial-runtime evidence around the calculation.

import assert from "node:assert/strict";
const records = [
  {id: "usage-a", customer: "demo", cents: 60000n, kind: "usage"},
  {id: "usage-b", customer: "demo", cents: 50000n, kind: "usage"},
  {id: "usage-a", customer: "demo", cents: 60000n, kind: "usage"},
  {id: "adjustment-b", customer: "demo", cents: -10000n, kind: "adjustment"}
];
function netCents(rows) {
  const seen = new Map();
  let total = 0n;
  for (const row of rows) {
    assert.equal(row.customer, "demo");
    const fingerprint = [row.customer, row.cents.toString(), row.kind].join("|");
    if (seen.has(row.id)) {
      if (seen.get(row.id) !== fingerprint) throw new Error("Conflicting duplicate");
      continue;
    }
    if (row.cents < 0n && row.kind !== "adjustment") throw new Error("Invalid sign");
    seen.set(row.id, fingerprint);
    total += row.cents;
  }
  return total;
}
const base = netCents(records);
assert.equal(base, 100000n);
assert.throws(() => netCents([...records,
  {id: "usage-a", customer: "demo", cents: 1n, kind: "usage"}
]));
const numerator = base * 1500n; // Hypothetical 15 percent in basis points.
if (numerator % 10000n !== 0n) throw new Error("Define contractual rounding first");
const surcharge = numerator / 10000n;
assert.equal(surcharge, 15000n);
const usd = cents => `${cents / 100n}.${(cents % 100n).toString().padStart(2, "0")}`;
console.log(JSON.stringify({baseUSD: usd(base), grossSurchargeUSD: usd(surcharge),
  totalUSD: usd(base + surcharge), paidReceiptVerified: false}));

Observed output is 1000 USD illustrative inference, 150 USD gross surcharge and 1150 USD total, with no verified paid receipt. Treat it as arithmetic evidence only. Preserve original purchased rights, logical conversations, agreed usage and explicit corrections in production. A correct sum cannot establish continuous model access or received customer money.

Move one feature and its complete exception path first

  • Identify the actual open-source or managed service, version and commercial scope.
  • Inventory customer, feature, model, allowance and payment mappings.
  • Choose one customer and preserve purchased rights and original usage history.
  • Rehearse a plan change during active work, period reset and explicit correction.
  • Verify actual access and financial records without duplicate live collection.
  • Retain original evidence and rollback until the complete customer journey is qualified.

Keep the selected OpenMeter implementation when it fits. Compare Stigg, Schematic, Flexprice or Lago for the specific access or usage-billing change, and ShareAI for approved customer-paid inference. Begin with one feature whose purchase, admission, consumption, plan transition and financial treatment remain explainable to support, product and finance together.

Frequently asked questions

Which OpenMeter alternatives should an AI app compare?

Stigg, Schematic, Flexprice and Lago address selected access, credit, usage-billing or deployment requirements. ShareAI concerns eligible inference paid through ShareAI with an approved app surcharge. Choose by the actual service and customer journey you need to change.

Is OpenMeter Cloud now Konnect Metering & Billing?

The current official OpenMeter documentation displays that transition notice. The open-source project remains a separate implementation path. Qualify the selected service, API version, hosting and account terms instead of assuming every example and hosted feature is interchangeable.

Is the OpenMeter project open source?

The official repository and reviewed license file identify Apache 2.0. Check the actual version and deployment selected. A public license does not establish identical managed-service features, commercial support or operating responsibilities.

Does OpenMeter only count usage events?

Current references also describe product catalog, subscriptions, billing integrations and metered, static or boolean entitlements. Compare the actual selected implementation rather than assume all access or credit logic must live outside the product.

Does a gateway on company infrastructure make the managed service on premises?

No. Gateway location and the managed metering and billing service are separate architectural choices. The cited current Kong entitlement reference identifies its own deployment boundary. Qualify where each component runs and who operates it.

What should an entitlement migration preserve?

Preserve trusted customer and feature identity, accepted rights, effective timing, current allowance and overage policy. Test continuity during active work and period reset. Matching a final balance alone does not prove the customer retained appropriate access throughout the change.

How does ShareAI Builder settlement differ by account type?

Validated company Builders have a 45-day review period before payout. Individuals currently accumulate inference value for ShareAI use, without cash-out or account transfers. Approval, eligible traffic and current account terms apply; usage and earnings are not guaranteed.

Can ShareAI replace every OpenMeter function?

The Builder Program concerns approved routed inference, an allowed app surcharge and attribution. The app remains hosted and maintained elsewhere. Other software rights, subscriptions and financial duties require explicit decisions; the program does not establish a replacement for every entitlement or billing workflow.
